Subject: Arthur D. Fielding, 45, Creative Director, Fiat Lux Design Reason Interviewed: Ginny Kim's Employer Date: November 21, 1996 Excerpts: Inspectors Linda Altamira and Alexis LeDuke Interview Transcript: LA Mr. Fielding, let's get specific about the events of November 13th, 1996, the day Ms. Kim disappeared. Who was the last person to see her alive? AF Well, I'm not sure. I saw her when I left which was around 4:00. I don't usually leave so early, but I was going up to the Sonoma house and wanted to beat the bridge traffic. My secretary, Mrs. Kinsley, might have an idea what happened after I left. LA What time did Ms. Kim usually leave? AF Typically around 6:00-6:30. LA Did you know of anyone leaving later than that on November 13th? AF I believe oneof my designers, Ms. D'Amata, said she left around 8:30, and she thought Ginny had already gone. LA Did Ms. Kim have keys to the office? AF Yes, everyone does. LA What is the security set-up at Fiat Lux? AF There's the main building door which is locked after 6:30 at night. The door to Fiat Lux has its own lock. Basically, there isn't a lot to steal. LA Has anything been reported missing since Ms. Kim disappeared that night? AF Well, this is going to sound stupid, but we can't find my pending file. LA Your what? AF My pending file. It's a folder that's waiting for me every day when I come in. Ginny and my secretary put it together the night before. It's for all the paperwork that needs immediate attention. Anyway, it wasn't there the morning after Ginny went missing. LA Did you find it? AF No. LA Are you worried about it? AF I wasn't really. Compared to Ginny's disappearance it didn't seem that important. I just assumed that Ginny had been putting some of Isabel's papers in it for me to look at and accidentally took it with her when she left. LA Do people normally take it home? AF No. But as I've said, the last few weeks were not normal. Ginny might have taken it by mistake. LA Mr. Fielding, we didn't find anything like that near Ms. Kim's body. Would someone else have taken it? AF I don't see why. LA Well, what was in it that day? Does your secretary know? AF She knows what she put in it, but she doesn't know what Ginny put in it. Hasn't led to any problems yet. I only mention it because it was strange. LA Mr. Fielding, we need a motive here. Is this pending file worth killing someone over? All we found was Ms. Kim's purse at the crime scene. The only thing that appears to be missing is her key ring. AF And she wasn't ... um...I don't know how to say this. I guess sexually... LA Sexually assaulted? No, she wasn't. Mr. Fielding, do you realize that there is someone out there who has the keys to Fiat Lux and knows that's where Ms. Kim worked. AF Oh. I'd better call Mrs. Kinsley immediately and have the locks changed. That's creepy. This could be some sort of serial killer who preys on design professionals. LA Uh huh. What exactly did Ms. Kim do for you, Mr. Fielding? AF Well, she really didn't do anything for me per say. She worked for my wife, Isabel. She was Isabel's administrative assistant. LA Worked for your wife? Why didn't she come down here with you? AF My wife died two weeks ago. It's been a nightmare. LA I'm sorry to hear that Mr. Fielding. Was your wife's death expected? AF No. No, she died in an accident at our country house. LA Where is that? AF Sonoma. She fell from the second floor balcony. She should have never been up there alone--it wasn't finished. I'm sorry to be going on like this. It's been so hard without Isabel and now Ginny... LA We can do this tomorrow if you need more time. AF No. I want to do it now and get it over with. That's why I called. LA Okay. Tell me more about Fiat Lux. It says here design firm. What's that exactly? AF Graphic design, you know, packaging, catalogs, brochures, Web sites. Basically high-end marketing. LA Uh huh. AF I'm the creative director. Isabel was my partner. She handled all the business development and our relationships with clients. Ginny worked for her as a co-ordinator. I'd say that Isabel was something of a mentor to Ginny. LA Hmm. What was it exactly that you said Ms. Kim did for your wife? AF Oh all kinds of administrative tasks. You know, taking phone calls, coordinating meetings, managing my wife's calendar, answering correspondence and trafficking client requests. That kind of thing. LA Once your wife died, was Ms. Kim concerned about her future at Fiat Lux? Did she seem upset? AF I have to find a replacement for Isabel. Ginny would have stayed as co-ordinator for the new account executive. LA It seems like Ms. Kim must have had access to a lot of confidential business information. AF Yes, I guess she did. Anyone in that position gets to know what's going on. The things that my secretary knows. I mean, it comes with the territory. LA I understand. Do you think anyone at Fiat Lux was jealous of Ms Kim? AF No. LA Do you think she was having an affair with anyone? A co-worker? Or a client perhaps? AF No, I don't. We are all very busy. I can't imagine her finding the time for those kinds of activities. LA Do you have any problem employees? You know, loose screws, obsessive types? AF Absolutely not. I hired these people. LA Okay. We are still going to need a list of all employees and their home phone numbers. Someone may know something. AF Yeah sure, I can do that. I'll have my secretary fax it to you. LA Or you can e-mail it to us. I'll give you an address. AF Cops have gone online huh? LA Yes we are, and it's a big pain in the butt. Were you and your wife happy together Mr. Fielding? AF Excuse me? LA We have to ask some personal questions, Mr. Fielding. AF Yes we were happy. She was a beautiful, talented woman. We worked hard together to build our business, which has been very successful. If you're trying to insinuate that there was something between Ginny and myself, I can assure you there wasn't. She was a great girl, but I prefer women. LA Did you know Ms. Kim's boyfriend, John? AF I met him at our Christmas party and then of course, I spoke with him when Ginny disappeared. We worked together on Ginny's missing poster. Seemed like a bright, decent person. He was extremely upset. LA You don't know of any tensions between him and Ms. Kim? AF No. I wouldn't know. LA Ms. Kim wouldn't have mentioned anything to Mrs. Fielding. AF Absolutely not. Isabel and Ginny had a very professional relationship. My wife did not discuss personal issues with our employees. She was a very private person. LA Uh huh. Okay, thank you Mr. Fielding, I don't have anything else I want to ask right now. What about you, Alexis? AL Mr. Fielding, do you think that Ginny and John might have been involved in drugs? AF No. But then, that can be a very hard thing to know about. My friend David's son had a coke problem and David had no idea until the kid was arrested. AL So you don't know. What about sex? Do you think Ginny might have had a thing for women? You know a girlfriend on the side? AF Now come on. The poor girl was just killed and you're trying to make it sound like she lived a sordid secret life. AL Not at all. We need to consider all the possibilities. AF I'm sorry. It's just if you knew Ginny. AL I'm sure that she was a good person. You have to understand that even good people don't get murdered without a reason. Please have Mrs. Kinsley send us that list of employees today. AF I'll send the list and let you know if I think of anything else. Good afternoon ladies. LA Good afternoon Mr. Fielding. We'll be in touch. Back to Main Menu
